Joshua is a traditionally trained potter who spent three years at Whichford Pottery in Warwickshire. Here he learnt techniques of throwing and making which have been developed through generations from the old itinerant potters. This lineage of skill was taken back to Galloway where he grew up and he established his own studio in 2019. His focus is on keeping alive this knowledge, and making objects which bring best of tradition into a contemporary setting. Whilst most of his work is functional ware, his practice also extends to sculpture, writing and material research. Through his exploration of the environments around the studio, he uses found objects as well as natural materials to inspire and craft his work. Clays and wood ash - the byproduct from local woodlands, are used in the glazes and surfaces of each piece. Interested in functional objects as more than just utilitarian, he sees the importance of craft in both enhancing our every day rituals, and in bringing together communities through shared stories and the joy of a prepared meal. Through seeing base materials as the core of something beautiful, he uses terracotta and clay slips to create pieces which are both energetic and purposeful.
